Tenerife, Spain - The Cabildo de Tenerife has initiated proceedings for 25 infractions recorded this Sunday in Montaña Pelada, a protected natural area located in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona. This was announced by the second vice president of the insular institution, José Miguel Ruano, during a press conference detailing the decisions of the Council of Government.
Types of Infractions and Penalties
The reported violations include unauthorized activities such as riding motorcycles in prohibited areas, illegal camping, and lighting fires. Vice President Ruano emphasized that these activities are "strictly prohibited" in protected natural areas.
The unauthorized use of fire, particularly in outdoor recreational areas, is a significant concern due to the high risk of forest fires. Ruano pointed out that such actions not only carry potential criminal consequences in the event of a wildfire but also incur substantial fines. Specifically, fines for riding motorcycles in natural monuments can reach up to 6,000 euros, while illegal camping incurs fines ranging from 400 to 600 euros. Unauthorized fire-setting, even without resulting damage, can result in fines up to 1,000 euros.
Strengthening Enforcement and Public Awareness
The Cabildo is enhancing its collaboration with various law enforcement agencies, including the Guardia Civil's Nature Protection Service (Seprona), local police in different municipalities, the Canary Islands Police, and environmental officers, to ensure the protection of these sensitive areas. Ruano noted that environmental officers have been "agents of the authority since 1995" and emphasized the legal obligation for individuals to identify themselves when requested by these officers.
In light of these incidents, the Cabildo de Tenerife urges the public to adhere to regulations and avoid "unacceptable behaviors" in protected natural spaces. The institution's efforts aim to safeguard the environment and ensure that these areas remain preserved for future generations.
